Colour Constancy in Goldfish and Man: Influence of Surround Size and Lightness

Colour constancy was investigated by using a series of 10 simultaneously presented surface colours ranging in small steps from green through gray to red – purple. Goldfish were trained to select one medium test field when the entire setup was illuminated with white light. In the tests, either red or green illumination was used. Colour constancy, as inferred from the choice behaviour, was perfect under green illumination when the test fields were presented on a gray or a white background, but imperfect on a black background. The uptake and release kinetics of134Cs by Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and137Cs by Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) from aquatic media of different ionic compositions and temperature was studied in controlled laboratory conditions. The accumulation of radiocesium in the case ofBrachydanio rerio is observed to be strongly dependent on the potassium ion concentration of the aquatic medium, but in the case ofCarassius auratus this dependence is quite weak. The biological half-lives of the cesium isotopes incorporated into the fish investigated in the present work vary from 19 to 80 days and are influenced by the temperature and the ionic composition of the aquatic medium.

Challenging fear: chemical alarm signals are not causing morphology changes in crucian carp (Carassius carassius)

The active components originate in conspecifics eaten by predators, and are found in the filtrate of homogenised conspecific skin. The present research aims to evaluate the beneficial effects of polyphenols derived from waste water from a olive mill, obtained by non-plastic molecular imprinting device, in a hypercholesterolemic diet on Carassius auratus, commonly known as goldfish that was selected as experimental model. The study was conducted with morphological and histochemical analyses and also the data were supported by immunohistochemical analysis. AbstractA set of 9–15 colored test fields was presented to goldfish. In Experiment 1, test field hues ranged from green through yellow to red; in Experiment 2, the hues varied from blue through gray to yellow. In the training conditions, the test fields were presented with a gray or black surround. The fish learned to choose one intermediate test field hue by rewarding them with food. In the test conditions, the color of the surround was changed from gray to green, or red (Experiment 1), and from black to blue, or yellow (Experiment 2). Motion detection in goldfish investigated with the optomotor response is “color blind”

AbstractThe action spectrum of the optomotor response in goldfish was measured to investigate which of the four cone types involved in color vision contributes to motion detection. In the dark-adapted state, the action spectrum showed a single maximum in the range of 500–520 nm, and resembled the rod spectral sensitivity function. Surprisingly, the action spectrum measured in the light-adapted state also revealed a single maximum only, located in the long wavelength range between 620 and 660 nm. Production and extraction of astaxanthin from Phaffia rhodozyma and its biological effect on alcohol-induced renal hypoxia in Carassius auratus

The effect of astaxanthin (3,3′-dihydroxy-s-carotene-4,4′-dione) on alcohol-induced morphological changes in Carassius auratus, as an experimental model, was determined. The yeast Phaffia rhodozyma was used as a source of astaxanthin. The animals were divided into three groups for 30 days: one group was treated with ethanol at a dose of 1.5% mixed in water, the second one with EtOH 1.5% and food enriched with astaxanthin from P. rhodozyma, and the third was a control group.
